In November 2005, Ben James was focusing on the NCS playoff game versus Miramonte and enjoying a fantastic senior season in which he was named all-league in the ACAL, as left tackle for the Highlanders. Fast forward nine years and Ben is now serving his country as a First Lieutenantin the Marine Corps leading a unit that recently assisted in shutting down historic Camp Leatherneck installation in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
After graduating from Piedmont High School in 2006, Ben earned a BS in Economics from the US Naval Academy in May of 2011. He was then afforded an opportunity to get a master’s degree in Finance from Johns Hopkins – Carey Business School. Currently Ben is a First Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, with a commission through May of 2016. His deployment was to Camp Leatherneck in Helmand Province Afghanistan with Combat Logistics Battalion 1 out of Camp Pendleton, CA.
The picture with this article is of Ben while traveling in Kabul on business. He was doing ground movements to the Ministry of Finance from ISAF HQ / US Embassy during Afghanistan’s first democratic transition of power and inauguration.
A great inspiration for Piedmont students interested in joining the Armed services, Ben is looking forward to returning home for Thanksgiving with his family in Piedmont and watching the NCS semi-finals from the sidelines at Witter Field.
1st Lt. James, we are thankful you have remained safe while on duty. You are a great Highlander warrior and we appreciate your service to our Country.
